Gas prices reduced
The price of a 12.5kg cylinder of Shell Gas has been reduced by Rs.117 while
that of a cylinder of Laugfs Gas has been reduced by Rs.85 from midnight yesterday, Trade and Consumer
Affairs Ministry said. “I will reduce or increase the prices as and when necessary. The price of gas
has been reduced because of the drop in the world market price of gas,” Minister Johnston Fernando
told a news conference. With the price reduction coming into effect today, a 12.5kg cylinder of
Shell Gas will be sold at Rs.1,652 while a 12.5kg cylinder of Laugfs Gas will be sold at

Laugfs cautions Government over gas
Laugfs Gas Company Chairman W.K.H. Wegapitiya yesterday asked the government
to be cautious about entering the local LP gas market by buying the contolling shares in the Shell Gas
Company because past experiences have shown that it was likely the government might incur major losses.
“When one looks back at the government’s record it is not unusual to find it mismanaging the businesses
it handles and thus being burdened with huge losses,”

Many eyeing Shell
Three to four multi-national companies are vying for the Shell
Gas company shares which are on offer. The Shell Gas sell out deal is still in the preliminary
stage and the Laugfs Holdings Limited is interested in securing the deal, Laugfs Holdings Limited

Laugfs working on deal with Shell
Laugfs Holding Limited is currently working on the deal with
Shell Gas to acquire the ownership of its LPG business here. “We are having discussions
with Shell and our representative is in England. Laugfs is interested in the deal and
initial work is progressing. There will be a positive outcome,” Laugfs Holding Limited

CPC
might cut off Laugfs
General Secretary of the UPFA,
Petroleum Resources Minister Susil Premjayantha said
the CPC was reviewing the agreement signed with the
Laugfs Gas and efforts would be taken to abrogate it
on the advice of the Supreme Court and produce and distribute
domestic gas independently by the CPC to give relief
to consumers. Speaking to media personnel at the Mahaweli
Center yesterday, Minister Premjayantha said the private
gas company has gone to the Supreme Court demanding
a market monopoly for the domestic gas produced by the
CPC as a by product of its refineries. “The CPC produces
between 15% - 20% of domestic gas requirement of the
country and sells the entire production to Laugfs Gas

Laugfs Gas Chairman W.K.H. Wegapitiya
yesterday reacted cautiously to reports that his company
is looking at acquiring the Shell Gas business in Sri
Lanka. "We are the most capable and suitable contender,"
he said. "Something is happening but it is too early
to say anything." Earlier Wegapitiya was quoted on a
website, Vimasuma.com, saying that his company’s representatives
were holding talks in London with Shell officials on
buying Shell’s Sri Lanka business. "We’re keen on buying

One of the biggest Gas price
increases in recent years came into effect from midnight
yesterday (May 6) with Laughs being permitted an increase
of Rs. 323 per 12.5 Kg cylinder and Shell Rs. 219. With
these latest price increases approved by the Ministry
of Cooperatives and Internal Trade, the price of a Shell
will now be Rs. 1,769 and Laughs Rs. 1,744. The earlier

The price of Domestic Gas will
increase with effect from midnight tonight with the
price of a 12.5 kg Shell gas cylinder up by Rs. 219
and Laugfs up by Rs. 323, the Consumer affairs Authority

The Minister of Cooperatives
and Internal Trade, Johnston Fernando, and Chairman
of the Consumer Affairs Authorities (CAA) Rumy Marzook
were not available for comment. The Island also learns
that a price of a 12.5 kg LG Gas Cylinder will be increased
by Rs. 50 to 75 on Wednesday (May 5). At present, a
shell gas cylinder is Rs. 1,550 and Laughs Rs. 1,421.
Representatives from Shell and Laugfs had discussions
with CAA officials on Thursday (April 29) and the price
increase requested was Rs. 350 per 12.5 kg cylinder.

Under the development plan of the Hambantota district, a new salt
factory will be set up by the local entity- Laugfs Salt and Chemicals (Pvt. Limited) in
Chitragala- Ambalantota. Minister of Irrigation and Water Management and Ports and Aviation,
Chamal Rajapaksa will lay the foundation stones for the construction of salt factory and

US$25m gas terminal for Hambantota
Laugfs Holding is to put up a gas terminal in Hambantota exploiting the
facilities from the proposed Hambantota Harbour. Chairman Southern Development Authority, Ranjith
Gunasekera said that the company has already earmarked a suitable land for the project and signage
has been already put up. The company hopes to invest around US$25 million for this project. He said
that the main objective of this project is to provide gas at a subsidised rate to the customers.

Rs.53 with effect from midnight tonight, said Trade, Marketing Development, Cooperatives
and Consumer Services Minister Bandula Gunawardena. Addressing a media-briefing in
Colombo yesterday, the Minister said the price of a 12.5 kg Laugfs gas cylinder will
be increased by Rs.100 following approval of the Price Committee of the Consumer
Affairs Authority (CAA). Accordingly, the new price of a 12.5kg Laughs gas cylinder
will be Rs.1,407 while a price of a 12.5kg Shell gas cylinder will be Rs.1,447. The
Minister said the Laugfs Gas Company has increased its gas imports in gradual steps.

raised by Rs. 191 and a 2.3kg cylinder by Rs. 35. The new price of 12.5kg
cylinder will now be Rs. 1,500 and a 2.3kg cylinder Rs. 276. Meanwhile LAUGFS

the Supreme Court to give CTB vehicles a free air emission test for one year. This
was told to Court when the rights violation application filed by an environmentalist

Over
100,000 vehicles tested
Over 100,000 vehicle owners in
the Western Province had had their vehicles tested for
emission levels by the end December, Air Resource Management
Centre (AirMac) of the Environment and Natural Resources
Ministry said yesterday. A senior official told The
Island that this amounts to almost 10 per cent of all
vehicles from motor buses to three wheelers in the Province.
Motor Traffic Commissioner Badulage Wijeratne recently
informed vehicle owners in the Western Province, through
press advertisements and various other means, that commencing
November 17, vehicles had to obtain the vehicle emission
test (VET) certificate to obtain the annual revenue

Consumers to benefit at next gas price revision - Laugfs chairman
The benefit of the drop in world crude oil prices will be passed on to
the consumers at the next price revision in January, said Chairman, Laugfs Holdings Limited,
W.K.H. Wegapitiya. He said commodity prices in the world market have dropped due to the
global recession. The Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) price is down US$ 350 per metric tonne
from US$ 950 per metric tonne four months ago. Laugfs revised its LPG prices this month
in line with the drop in world fuel prices.The price of a 12.5 kg cylinder was reduced

Laugfs wants CPC hedging stopped
Laugfs Holdings Limited chairman yesterday filed a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court seeking an interim order to cancel hedging contracts between Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and international banks.

Laugfs takes over Emerald Bay, Temple Tree Resorts
Laugfs Leisure Limited has taken over the management of Emerald Bay Hotel and
Temple Tree Resorts and Spa in the Induruwa area. Director CEO, Laugfs Leisure Limited Harsha Gamage
said the company is now looking at consolidating their hotel portfolio. "It was due to this that I
came to the WTM and met several operators who are ready to market these two properties," he said. Emerald

Laugfs threatens legal action against CAA
Laugfs Gas Lanka Limited yesterday said it would be taking legal action against the Consumers Affairs Authority (CAA) for un-ethical practices and Shell Gas Lanka Limited for LPG price manipulations as against recent price revisions.
Laugfs Group Chairman W H. Wegapitiya told Daily Mirror FT that in accordance with the ‘Pricing Formula Agreement’ signed between Laugfs Gas Limited and CAA in consideration of the reduction of the Saudi Aramco Contracted Price pertaining to the months of July and September 2008, the CAA directed the company to revise the retail price of a domestic LPG (12.5 kg) cylinder to a maximum retail price (in Colombo) of Rs.1,679.00 with effective from 01st November 2008, ...more>> |

Laugfs Gas to reduce prices from November 1
Laugfs Gas Chairman W.K.H. Wegapitiya told The Nation that gas prices would be reduced from the beginning of next month. However he was unable to specify the amount. Gas prices down
The Government brought down the prices of Laugfs and Shell gas
from midnight yesterday. The new price of a domestic gas cylinder of Laugfs and Shell
will be Rs. 1,679 and Rs. 1,785. “This is clearly passing the benefit of the decreasing
world LP gas price to local consumers,” Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Bandula
Gunawardena told the media yesterday. The Government had to increase and decrease the
prices of a cylinder of gas to adjust to the price fluctuation in the world market.
The blame came to the Ministry, Consumer Affairs Authority and finally to the Government.
The price of an LP gas cylinder will be adjusted by a formula. One formula has been applied

VET
certificate a must for revenue licence from Oct. 1
All motor vehicle owners will
have to obtain the Vehicle Emission Test (VET) Certificate
to be eligible for the Revenue Licence from October
1. A Gazette notification issued on January 25 this
year has made it mandatory that motor vehicle owners
should pass the VET to qualify for the Revenue Licence.
The objectives of the program are to minimise carbon
emission, make vehicles' fuel efficient and environment
friendly. A change of attitude towards using vehicles
which are in good condition is a long-term objective.

Time to gas it up
Taking advantage of the increasing fuel prices Laugfs Gas Auto Ltd.
is promoting auto gas conversion insisting that it will give consumers an annual saving of
over Rs.184, 800. “Within a year Sri Lanka has seen petrol prices increase from Rs.106 to
Rs.157 per litre whilst gas increased from Rs.62 to Rs.80 which is a mere 29% compared to
the 48% increase in the case of Petrol”, Laugfs Gas Chairman W.K.H Wegapitiya said at a

Laugfs also ups gas price
Days after the Shell gas price hike, Laugfs Gas also increased the price of a 12.5kg domestic cylinder by Rs. 261 from midnight yesterday.
Accordingly, a Laugfs 12.5 kg cylinder will cost Rs. 1721.
A spokesman for the company said that despite the approval from the Consumer Affairs Authority to increase the price of a cylinder by Rs. 371, it decided to only increase by Rs. 261. |

Laugfs moves into solid tyres, hotels
Laugfs Holdings plans to construct its own gas terminal and also expand market penetration in LP Gas both in the domestic and industrial sectors next year, the company said.
Group Managing Director Thilak De Silva said Laugfs branded lubricants will be in the market place during the first quarter of the year while commercial production of one of the company’s biggest investment made in the recent past -- manufacture of solid and industrial tyres -- will commence during May/June and will be exporting the products to North American markets initially. Laugfs will install its facilities for Vehicle Emission Testing of the entire vehicle fleet of the country by April 2008 under the licence of the Department of Registrar of Motor Vehicles. De Silva said they would also start construction of the proposed seven star “small luxury” hotel in Marawila of the west cost by mid 2008. |

The Vehicle Emission Testing (VET) programme will be implemented
in next year. It is mandatory for vehicle owners to obtain the VET certifications from 2008.
The VET programme was officially launched last month. CleanCo, Lanka (Pvt) Ltd and Laugfs
Eco Sri have been selected to implement the programme from April next year.These companies

Laugfs ventures into leisure sector
Laugfs Holdings is diversifying its business into the leisure
sector with a Rs. 500 million investment on a small luxury hotel. The project is
targeted to be completed within eighteen months, General Manager, Laugfs Leisure
Limited, Aruna Jayalath said. Jayalath said the construction of the project will
start in January 2008. They have also applied for membership with the Small Luxury

The estimated cost of this project will be US $ 10 to 15 million. Laugfs Lanka

Laugfs LPG import terminal to enhance supply
Laugfs Holdings Ltd. will construct the Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG)
import terminal at a cost of US$ 10 million in the Galle Harbour by the end of this year.
The import terminal which will be built on land provided by the Southern Development Authority
will commence commercial operations by the end of next year. Chairman, Laugfs Holdings W.K.H.

A mega gas filling complex is to be built in close proximity to the port of Galle by Laugfs Gas Company Limited with an investment of one billion rupees. Laugfs Gas Company will be exploring new horizons down under with an
investment of Australian $ 2 million in the auto gas conversions sector, which will be
kicking off operations by the end of this month. This new venture will also grant
Laugfs “multinational” status, as the first energy company in Sri Lanka to branch out

going for a open tender to sell Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Chairman of the CPC Asantha de Mel told the Daily News that

SunUp supermarkets; the popular consumer

fuel pumping stations linked to computers with payment by

Use of
auto gas can reduce fuel cost by 47%

In an initiative to bring down current
high cost in the motoring industry Laugfs Auto Gas announced
that by switching into auto gas motorists can now bring down
their fuel bill by 47%.
Laugfs Auto
Gas Chairman W.Wegapitiya said that as per current pricing
a liter of petrol is sold atRs.88 and auto gas is sold Rs.45
per liter. By switching switching into auto gas motorists
can asve Rs.43. Therefore motorist now have the opportunity
to reduce their fuel bill by 47%.
He said that
in order to popularize the use of auto gas the company is
planning to establish filling stations across the country
including in Anuradapura, Nuvaraeliya, Badulla, Matara, Rathnapura,
Dabulla, Kegalle and Kalutara.

auto Gas for in place of motor gasoline in way back in 1995.Currentry

The Laugfs Gas management is up in arms,
as the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has not granted them
the green light for a price increase for their Liquid Petroleum
(LPG) gas cylinders.
CAA has already granted approval
for Shell Gas to increase a gas cylinder by Rs. 110. "This
is very unfair," said the Chairman Laugfs Lanka Limited,

Gas
Price up by Rs.110
The price of a cylinder of liquid petroleum
gas was increased by Rs.110 from yesterday the shell company
announced.
The company said it had no option but to
increase the price of its 12.5kg cylinder to Rs960. Shell
and laugfs gas, the two main players in the gas market, had
earlier threatened to restrict supplies if the consumer affairs
authority (CAA) did not allow them to increase the prices
because of increases in world market prices. more>> |
