LPG Industry Analysis

Sri Lanka is one of the fastest growing markets for domestic, commercial and industrial Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) in South Asia. The growth rate of the industry reached double figures a decade ago and this figure is continuously increasing which shows a promising future for the players in the industry. Imported quantity of LPG in the year 1993 was 38,000 MT and it has grown 180,000 MT in the year 2007. This excludes the daily average production of 60 MT by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) refinery at Sapugaskanda. After liberalization of the gas industry in year 2001, LAUGFS Gas (LG) entered the market as the second player in the downstream LPG operatins in the market. As a consequence to LG entering the market, the consumers in the country experienced a significant improvement in safety, service standards & customer care.

Currently the industry comprises of two players.

History and Summary

LAUGFS Gas (LG) is a fully owned subsidiary of Laugfs Holdings Limited which has diverse interests in Petroleum, Lubricants, Real Estate, Modern Trade, Leisure, Solid Tyres, Emission Testing & Value added Coir. LG is a Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) approved venture and the first indigenous energy (LPG) company in Sri Lanka . LG commenced its commercial operations on the 22nd of October 2001. Today, LG is the second fully fledged LPG downstream player in Sri Lanka after the liberalization of the LPG market. LG is a truly Sri Lankan organization backed by dynamic, dedicated, devoted & socially responsible local entrepreneurs.

Catering to the entire country including the North and the East, LG has a strong dealer network (1600 Dealers) that operates as “LAUGFS GAS POINT”. Through these LAUGFS GAS POINTS; LG distributes domestic LPG cylinders and various LPG related accessories under the brand name “Laugfs”. Today LG enjoys more than 28% market share in the domestic sector whilst retaining the 85% market share in the Auto Gas retailing sector.

LG equipped with a modern LPG storage facility and a fully automated bottling plant at Mabima, East of Colombo and 15 KM’s away from Colombo for convenient logistics for importing LPG from foreign suppliers. LG also cater to bulk LPG needs of industrial users, supplied through its own fleet of modern road tankers. LG commands a market share of 60% in the industrial bulk LPG sector.

As the only Sri Lankan entity in the LPG business in Sri Lanka, LG has not only showed an extraordinary growth in sales but also operate as a highly profitable marketing venture. The sales trend has shown a healthy continuous growth at a rate much faster than the average market growth rate, giving LG an ever increasing share of a fast expanding LPG market in Sri Lanka.

However, until 2001, LG was compelled to restrict its activities to the conversion of petrol powered vehicles to LPG and the retailing of auto LPG purchased from other importers who enjoyed a trade monopoly. With the end of the five year trade monopoly in the LPG downstream business in the year 2000, dawned a new era of free trade and LG expeditiously entered into LPG importation, storage, bottling and distribution activities, thus becoming the first and only Sri Lankan company to venture into this field and also the very first recipient of the prestigious ISO 9002 accreditation, in the whole of South East Asia for LPG auto conversions. Subsequently, our entry into the LPG downstream activities received a boost when we secured a five year contract with Ceylon Petroleum Corporation for the purchase of the entire output of LPG produced at their refinery. Within six years of liberalization of the LPG sector, LG has succeeded in gaining market share of 28% in the domestic sector, 60% of industrial bulk LPG market. This is ample testimony to LG’s competitiveness and dedication to customer satisfaction.

Since then LG has made steady inroads into the domestic LPG downstream activities and other sectors as well, winning customer confidence and becoming the most innovative and progressive service provider in each of our core areas of operations. Today LG is fast becoming a household name and a significant force in the Sri Lankan industrial & energy landscape.
